How to read the numbers in a Pinterest keyword report

September 8, 2026 · Blog

Pinterest never publishes an absolute search count. Not on the public trends site, not in the API. What it publishes is a normalized index from 0 to 100 showing a keyword against its own peak. Everything else is built on top of that.

Calibrate the anchor first

Pick one keyword where you already know your real traffic from Pinterest Analytics. Run it through the tool, then adjust the anchor number in settings until the estimate matches what you actually see. Every other keyword then scales correctly against it. Skip this and the volume column is a ranking, not a measurement.

Difficulty is a ratio, not a score out of ten

It compares how many pins already compete for a term against how many people search it. A term with a million pins and a thousand searches is crowded. A term with ten thousand pins and the same thousand searches is where a new account can actually place.

Watch the peak month

Pinterest runs ahead of the calendar. People plan there. Seasonal terms start climbing six to eight weeks before the event, so a pin published in the peak month has already missed most of the run. Pin into the climb, not the peak.
